Proximus publishes fourth annual report on cybersecurity

Agoria member Proximus has published its annual research on "the impact of cybersecurity on companies in the Benelux". More than 250 CEOs, CI(S)Os and IT managers participated in the survey, from which six conclusions can be drawn.

One of the conclusions is that by 2022, one in three companies will experience at least one cybersecurity incident. According to the report, 32% of respondents experienced a cybersecurity incident within their organization by 2022, with nearly half of the incidents being the result of a deliberate attack. The most common form of (intentional) attack was social engineering, such as phishing, followed by ransomware and malware such as viruses, worms and Trojan horses. Unauthorized acts and data breaches were the most frequently reported cause of accidental incidents.

These cyber incidents have very serious consequences for the affected organizations. A third (30%) of these reports resulted in employee inactivity and almost half had a financial impact. The frequency of cyber attacks in large companies is also significantly higher (60%) than in SMEs (25%), and this is directly proportional to the attention paid to awareness. At 80% of large companies there is at least one awareness training per year, at SMEs only 54%. This means that there is no cyber security awareness training at almost four out of ten companies! We are also seeing growing attention to cyber security in terms of budget: more than one in five (20%) has increased their budget.

The results of the report indicate that companies are effectively increasing their cybersecurity level. We see this reflected in the figures especially for large companies, but this is less the case for SMEs. They usually do not have the same resources or technical expertise as large companies. However, there is still much work to be done. Agoria offers its member companies support in various ways.
